Sonic Theater Workshop

In collaboration with Jorge Raedó

Description

This is a 20 hours sonic workshop target to a group of children (15-20) between 9-11 years. During the workshop we explore, discover, understand and play with architectural spaces by creating a dramaturgy where the main character is the sound. The children will discover the architectural project of a building (Sibelius Academy and Musiikkitalo) and the fantastic world of sounds living in the geometries and structures of the building. The children will create a set of characters or personages which each voice and sonic world is developed using vocal, mechanical and electronic sounds. The sonic characters are then composed in a dramatic line built during a collective process of creation and will be presented in a public performance at the end of the workshop.

Methods

This workshop is an active pedagogical project, where the children engage in the whole process of decision making, design and interpretation of a theatrical-sonic piece. Is our conviction that by generating and moderating the creative process of listening, imaging and performing an acoustical-dramatic piece, we contribute to the children's artistic education, we develop new audiences for a contemporary art production and we increase the awareness and responsibility of our sonic environment. Our role is to introduce a number of architectural, theatrical and musical tools to the children and to stimulate and assist the activities of exploration composition and performance with such tools.

Objectives

  • Develop new audiences through a pedagogical process of creation and interpretation.
  • Build up sensibilities for the aural environment and the development of a creative sonic responsibility.
  • Focus the attention in the potentials of collective creative processes by creating a working space in the image of a micro-society where the tasks related with the conception and performance of the pieces are discussed collectively.
  • Improve the critical thinking, the aesthetical judgments and the understanding of an architectural plan, a dramatic plot and a sonic composition.
  • Experimenting with the tools of architecture, theatre and sonic art while acquiring performative skills on it.
  • Share an experimental-artistic regard of the architecture and sonic arts using theatrical concepts.
